Why we should regrind our tools ?

Benefits:

The purpose of resharpening or regrinding is to return the cutting tool to its original level of performance. Although performance can be brought back to the original condition, tool life will be somewhat less than originally experienced. The average life of performance after regrinding a tool is established at 60 to 70% of the original life expectancy.

The timing of regrind is judged or based by the quality of holes, surface roughness, cutting resistance and the extent of damage to the cutting edge. However, regrinding of severely damaged drills can be more costly and harmful as an end result. It is important therefore to regrind your tool before the cutting edge is totally worn.

Grinding Limits:

The purpose of regrinding (sharpening) is to make a used tool perform as effectively as a new tool. Although performance can be brought back to the original condition, tool life is (understandably) shorter because of the slight loss of material. The average life of a drill after regrinding is accepted to be about 50 to 70% that of the original life expectancy.

There are several factors to consider when determining if regrinding is necessary.

 

1) The type of wear:

 

A. Flank wear
B. Margin wear
C. Crater wear
D. Corner wear
E. Chisel edge wear

 

2) Hole size, precision of the hole, surface finish
3) Chip color and form
4) Cutting force, noise, and vibration
5) Number of holes

Regrinding Based on the Amount of Flank Wear.

 

We recommend regrinding HSS drills when the value of “W” reaches 0.4mm for small drills and 0.7mm for larger drills. For carbide drills, regrind when W is 0.2-0.4mm. When regrinding a drill, all visible wear must be removed.

Regrinding Method:

In order to obtain the best results, drills should be reground as if they were brand new. Some customers, however, cannot achieve this precision because they use different regrinding machines.
The following recommendations will help users gain better results with reground drills.

  • Maintain a low grinding temperature when sharpening HSS drills.
  • Completely remove all chipping and wear.
  • After regrinding, keep a small lip height difference, a small run out of the chisel edge, and the same point angle as the original design.
  • When regrinding, avoid chipping, small breakage and grinding burrs.

Regrinding Carbide Drills:

OSG has developed a regrinding machine which specializes in sharpening carbide drills. If customers have to regrind with a conventional grinding machine, they should follow the following procedure:

 

1) Face relief grinding: The point angle of twisted drills is set against the grinding wheel. Primary relief is ground later.

  • 20° for the point angle
  • 9 to 10° for the primary relief angle
2) Primary relief angle is set against the grinding wheel in order to obtain an angle of 25°.
3) Grinding X thinning
4) Grinding X thinning:

  • 30 to 35° against the cutting edge.
  • 25 to 30° against the axis of the drill.
  • Chisel edge length: 0.15 to 0.25mm.
  • Round the sharp corners connecting the thinning and the cutting edge by hand lapper. Hone all cutting edges by hand lapper.
5) Lip height must be within 0.02mm, all wear must be eliminated, and the chamfer angle must be correct.

 

We also recommend re-coating carbide drills after regrinding.
